Today is World Card Making Day and I am going to attempt to show you a tutorial on how I make a shaker card. Now there are lots of different ways to go about it and you tend to try a couple of them and then settle for what's the easiest for you. It is very photo heavy but I was trying to cater for complete newbie shaker card makers!
Here is the sketch I am working from, it is the first card sketch for October over at
Sketch N Scrap and was designed by Kelly Holifield.
This is the finished card for which I used papers from Authentique and My Mind's Eye.
These are the stash items you will need to make a double framed shaker card- patterned papers, two plain cardstock, three Nestabilities dies (I'm using rectangles but you can use any that can make frames when placed inside each other), foam sheet (available from children's craft section), acetate, and sequins.
To start off I drew around the MIDDLE sized die on the BACK of the plain cardstock that I am using for the top frame on my card (in my case the grey).
I then cut around that pencil line leaving a little excess. Using double sided sticky tape go around the pencil line but don't take the backing off!
Cut a piece of acetate roughly the same size as your cardstock.
Now using that middle frame again cut out your shape from the cardstock with the tape on and cut out your shape from the acetate.
ONLY THE CARDSTOCK this time, use the smaller die of the three to cut a frame in the middle.
Now you can see you have a frame that has a sticky backing on it. Of course you can cut out your frame and then add some tape but I find it less fiddly this way.
Remove the paper to reveal the sticky goodness!
Stick on your shaped piece of acetate (that fits perfectly to your frame!).
For your next larger frame you will need the LARGEST DIE and the SMALLEST DIE.
With the other colour cardstock that you are using (in my case the white) and the foam, make a stack on your Bigshot (or other machine) in this order from the bottom - foam, cardstock, smallest die largest die. Now make sure you get those dies lined up so that the small die is right in the middle of the big one.
This is what you should be left with after running it through your machine - two frames, one in foam and one in cardstock. Glue them together.
Now adhere the first smaller frame (with the acetate window) to the larger frame (with the foam backing) and you should end up with something like this.
After you have decorated your card base place some sequins in the area where your window will be. You will probably need more filling than you think to make it look good!
Glue your completed frame down onto your card, making sure all you sequins are safely in the middle and out of the way of the sticky stuff! You could of course use double sided tape for speed.
Decorate the rest of your card - I used some fussy cut flowers with added glitter and strips of stripy paper to follow the sketch.
A little sentiment sticker from Authentique.
Here is my finished card again.
I hope this tutorial was helpful for those of you that have yet to have a go at making a shaker card. They really do make the card special!
Of course I do like to make two cards instead of one so here is the second card using the same sketch. First I matted the leftover centres of the frames from the shaker card.
fussy cut some more flowers.
Added another sentiment sticker and voila another card that was super quick! Don't forget the glitter!!!!!
Well I hope you get the chance to join in the sketch challenge over at
Sketch N Scrap, if not today on World Card Making Day but at some point this month. You have until October 31st to submit your creation.
